Up for review is my extra hands / helping hands soldering tool. This is a weird looking tool that has a good purpose. I found out about this tool from reading and automotive wiring book. It mentioned that this should be one of the essential tools if you plan to rewire a car and they were right in my opinion. I wish I had known about it sooner. This tool has two alligator clips that are used to hold the wire while your other hands are holding the solder and soldering iron. The tool also includes a magnifying glass and a soldering iron holder. I bought this off of a supplier on ebay for $15.00 including shipping. I found that you can also get this tool from Harbor Freight. Here is the good and bad about this tool.
THE GOOD
Better soldered joints - By not having to worry about holding the wire you can concentrate on the placement of the soldering iron tip and solder which results in a better soldered joint as compared to not using the tool.
Inexpensive but rugged– This tool does not cost a lot but I have used it a lot and it has saved me a lot of time on rewire jobs
THE BAD
Stability – The tool that I bought has a large heavy magnifying glass and a small base that causes the tool to fall over if it is not adjusted correctly and not on a fairly level surface.
Size – This tool is good for benchwork but you can’t use it underneath a dashboard
This tool saves a lot of time and I tend to get good soldered joints when I don't have to worry about holding the wire and the soldering iron at the same time. I have had this tool for about 10 years and I recommend it if you solder wire.
